How To Read A Funnel Before You Spend On Ads

More traffic is the most expensive way to fix a funnel that leaks. Here is the diagnosis we run before recommending any media spend.

Introduction

Every engagement starts the same way: someone asks us to increase traffic. We almost never do that first. Pouring volume into a funnel that leaks is the most expensive way to discover where the hole is.

1. Find The Stage That Leaks First

Map the drop-off between every step, from first visit to closed deal. One stage is always dramatically worse than the rest. Fix that one and everything you spend afterwards goes further.

2. Check Whether Traffic Is The Problem At All

If your site converts at half the rate of comparable businesses, you do not have a traffic problem — you have a conversion problem that traffic will only make more costly.

3. Talk To Ten Customers Before You Write A Headline

Ten conversations with people who recently bought will tell you more about what to say than any keyword tool. Use their words, not your internal vocabulary.

4. Set The Baseline You Will Be Judged Against

Write down current conversion rates, cost per opportunity, and sales cycle length before anything changes. Teams that skip this step spend the next two quarters arguing about whether the work is working.

Final Thought

Diagnosis is unglamorous and it is where the return comes from. Spending starts once you know which number you are trying to move.
